John’s interest in Sport and Exercise Medicine developed during his own athletics career when he competed as a middle distance runner for Sale Harriers Manchester and N Ireland.
Following his appointment as a Consultant in Sports & Exercise Medicine, John acted as Institute Medical Officer for British Athletics in 2013 and Chief Medical Officer for Team GB at the Youth Olympic Games in 2014.
He currently works as a private orthopaedic physician, plus acts as Lead Physician for the South Manchester NHS MSK service.
John’s specialist interests include:
- Research into fatigue and underperformance in athletes
- The development of clinical pathways for the management of: asthma in sport; Female Athlete Triad and Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport(RED-S); sports related concussion; bone stress injuries and tendinopathies.
John is a keen educator; he acts as an educational supervisor and clinical supervisor to sports medicine registrars and teaches on various MSc courses in London and Manchester.

John initially trained as a GP in Manchester before spending 2 years of higher specialist training as a registrar in Sport and Exercise Medicine in the London Deanery where he worked at the Olympic Medical Institute, Chelsea FC academy and then with the orthopaedic team at Charing Cross Hospital.
He completed his training in the Yorkshire Deanery at the Royal Hallamshire and Northern General Hospitals in Sheffield. His first consultant post was at the tertiary referral Defence Military Rehabilitation Centre at Headley Court in Surrey. From 2008 to 2013 John also worked as Endurance Medical Officer to British Athletics at St Mary’s University in Twickenham and then at the National Performance Institute in Loughborough.
He worked with Team GB endurance track and marathon athletes for several years at altitude training camps in France and Kenya in preparation towards the 2012 Olympics. He worked as team doctor to the British Paralympic Athletics team at the IPC World Championships in France in 2013 and has worked extensively with Great Britain & N Ireland teams at World and European Cross Country Championships since 2007.
